Launch of HEalth Care Worker PROphylaxis (HEROs) Trial

Co-Principal Investigators Dr. Megan Landes, GHEM Director, and Dr. Kevin Kain, tropical disease expert and Researcher at Toronto General Hospital, are leading a randomized controlled trial investigating whether hydroxychloroquine can prevent infection in frontline staff at high risk for COVID-19 exposure.

Known as the HEalth Care Worker PROphylaxis (HEROs) Trial, it is one of the world’s first trials evaluating the use of hydroxychloroquine for this purpose. The trial is enrolling all frontline staff, from doctors and nurses to social workers to sanitation staff, at 4 sites: UHN, Mount Sinai Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospital, and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. An interim analysis of results could be available as soon as this Summer. Congratulations to Dr. Landes and the HEROs team on the launch of this critical project!
